Proposed blockbuster trade with NBA resulted in Knicks getting $221 million star deal for Randle

If the New York Knicks want to make a major move this offseason, three-time All Star Julius Randle remains the biggest trade chip the team might be willing to deal. CBS Sports’ Sam Quinn speculated on a scenario in which the Knicks land Karl-Anthony Towns in a blockbuster trade with the Minnesota Timberwolves.

Minnesota is coming off a deep playoff run, but is also headed for a costly luxury tax deal. Quinn’s proposal calls for the Knicks to send Randle, Bojan Bogdanovic and draft picks to the Wolves for Towns.

“How much do the Knicks want to improve Julius Randle? There’s a pretty simple scenario here where Minnesota trades Towns for Randle and Bojan Bogdanovic along with some capital with the idea that they can simply pay for a $30 million forward next season instead of a big $50 million,” Quinn wrote in a May Story 31, 2024 message titled “Karl-Anthony Towns Trade Rumors Are Inevitable After Timberwolves Lose to Mavericks, But Are They Realistic?”

“Towns, both a CAA client and Kentucky alumnus, has long been in the orbit of New York power brokers. It’s hard to believe the Knicks don’t have bigger trade ambitions, and Towns’ first-round deal with Tom Thibodeau didn’t end well.
