An instance is represented by teams ranked 9 through 12 in each conference that organizes a four-team single elimination tournament. The winner of that event has the right to play the current seed no. 8 to get the final place in the 16-team formal playoff.
The Knicks would arrive at the play-in event while they were in 12th place at 21-45. The Nets (30-34) have already been classified as seed n. 7.
The play-in model would be Silver’s attempt to incentivize some lottery teams to return to action this season. Some residents of the NBA fund, however, would officially end. Adding more teams to the playoffs is another concept.
“It would be a median between the end of the season with all the teams and only the teams still mathematically alive, no matter how unrealistic their chances are,” said an NBA source.
On Friday, during a conference call with the players, Silver said that all the owners are on board to play again.
