The New York Knicks are entering a pivotal season with Jalen Brunson leading the charge, and depth in the backcourt could be key to sustaining a championship run. According to Ian Begley of SportsNet New York, the Knicks should strongly consider keeping Malcolm Brogdon and Landry Shamet beyond training camp.
Analyst View: Both Could Stay
Begley expects the Knicks to evaluate their roster throughout preseason but ultimately believes both guards will make the cut:
“I’d expect them to let things play out during camp/preseason before they made a move to keep both Brogdon and Shamet. But if I’m betting today, I’m betting that both Brogdon and Shamet are on the regular season roster.”
Roster Moves to Make Space
Keeping Brogdon and Shamet would require trimming the roster. One option could be trading rookie guard Tyler Kolek, which would give New York the flexibility to keep both veterans while remaining under the second apron. The downside, however, would be limited ability to add more players later in the season.
Another possibility is moving on from a long-term developmental project such as Pacome Dadiet, who isn’t expected to see meaningful playing time in the near future.
Why It Matters for a Finals Push
Both Brogdon and Shamet bring valuable experience, shooting, and playmaking off the bench — attributes that could prove decisive in the postseason. Even if the Knicks opt against keeping both, the roster is already well-positioned for a deep playoff run. Still, retaining them would strengthen New York’s depth and provide proven contributors behind Brunson.
