Despite already adding Jordan Clarkson and Guerschon Yabusele in free agency, the New York Knicks are still exploring ways to bolster their bench depth as they aim to build a championship-caliber roster for the 2025-26 NBA season.

Knicks Were in the Mix for Dante Exum

According to Ian Begley of SNY, the Knicks were in serious consideration for veteran guard Dante Exum before he opted to re-sign with the Dallas Mavericks.

“Dante Exum considered the Knicks as a possible destination before agreeing to a deal with Dallas on Wednesday,” Begley reported. “The Knicks also reached out to free agent Ben Simmons earlier this week, indicating they’re still evaluating options for a backup guard.”

Exum, who just turned 29, agreed to a one-year contract with the Mavericks. The Australian guard has logged eight seasons in the NBA and is widely regarded for his elite perimeter defense, while also offering efficient scoring and playmaking when called upon.

Knicks Keeping Tabs on Backup Guard Market

The Knicks’ recent activity confirms their commitment to adding depth at the guard position. While Exum ultimately chose to stay in Dallas, New York’s front office continues to monitor free agents like Ben Simmons as potential additions to support Jalen Brunson in the backcourt.

With the Knicks positioning themselves as contenders in the Eastern Conference, strategic depth pieces like Exum—or others with similar skill sets—could play a key role down the stretch.
