Why the Knicks Moved On From Tom Thibodeau Despite Playoff Success

The New York Knicks stunned the NBA world this summer when they decided to part ways with head coach Tom Thibodeau, despite a 51–31 season and an Eastern Conference Finals appearance. What was even more surprising, however, was the lack of resistance from within the locker room.

Respect Without Resistance

According to Ian Begley of SiriusXM NBA Radio, while players respected Thibodeau’s defensive system and work ethic, no veteran went to management demanding that he stay. Even Josh Hart, one of Thibodeau’s closest allies in the locker room, did not publicly insist on his return.

Begley noted:

“These guys loved Tom Thibodeau but none of them said, ‘Hey, Tom has to be the coach here’ or ‘I’m leaving.’ If that happened, maybe Tom Thibodeau is still here.”

The Price of a Tough Style

Thibodeau’s five-year run in New York was defined by discipline, defensive toughness, and an unwavering commitment to preparation. But the same traits that earned him praise also wore on players. His demanding practices and heavy minutes load created a sense that a new voice was needed.

A Quiet Goodbye

In the end, the Knicks’ decision reflected not a lack of respect, but rather a lack of urgency to keep Thibodeau. The silence from the roster spoke volumes: while they valued what he had built, they were ready to embrace change and move forward under new leadership.
