From Knicks Star to Italy’s Farewell: Danilo Gallinari Announces Final Run with National Team

Former Knicks favorite Danilo Gallinari reveals EuroBasket will be his last tournament with Italy, as he chases a long-awaited medal to cap his career.

The New York Knicks have made countless roster moves over the past two decades, but one player who remains a sentimental favorite is Danilo Gallinari.

Gallinari’s time in New York was brief — less than three seasons — before he was shipped to Denver in the blockbuster trade that brought Carmelo Anthony to Madison Square Garden in 2011. While it was an easy decision for the front office to acquire a superstar, many fans were reluctant to see Gallinari go. His scoring touch, versatility, and fiery spirit made him one of the most beloved young Knicks of that era.

From Madison Square Garden to International Glory

After leaving New York, Gallinari carved out a successful NBA career across several stops, showcasing his shooting and offensive versatility. Yet no matter where he played, Knicks fans always tied him back to his roots in the Big Apple.

Now, Gallinari is preparing to close another chapter: his international career. Speaking to La Gazzetta dello Sport, the veteran forward revealed that the upcoming EuroBasket will be his final appearance with the Italian national team.

“All I need is a medal with the national team and then I can be happy,” Gallinari admitted. “It’s hard not to think about what could have been. I started with the national team at 17 or 18, right after the 2004 Olympic team, but I missed eight summers with injuries. I always wonder what might have happened if I had played those too. But this summer, anything can happen.”

A Fitting Final Chapter

For Gallinari, 36, this tournament represents not just the end of an era, but the chance to finally secure the international medal that has eluded him throughout his career. For Knicks fans, it’s another reminder of what could have been if his time in New York had lasted just a little longer.

As he prepares to suit up for Italy one last time, Gallinari closes his journey where it began: chasing greatness on the biggest stage.
