The Knicks would make a mistake by taking Montrezl Harrell

Montrezl Harrell will have many suitors, but the Knicks shouldn’t necessarily be one of them.

The first red flag is his performance in the Orlando bubble. Harrell arrived late due to an urgent family matter and when stepped on he looked like a shell of himself. In the playoffs, he averaged 10.5 points and 2.5 rebounds per game. The Clippers were also beaten by 68 points while Harrell was on the pitch.

Another big problem is Harrell’s lack of footage. Assuming no trades are made, at least one between Julius Randle and Mitchell Robinson will start in the frontcourt next year. Adding Harrell to the mix would completely nullify any hope of proper spacing, leading to the same problems from 2019.

Spacing isn’t just important to Barrett, as Julius Randle often performs best when placing defenders inside the paint. More takes would also help Mitchell Robinson find more room to go up for lobs and dunks.

If the Knicks were to spend a lot this off-season, it would be far better to add a player who can spread the word in the form of someone like Davis Bertans or Fred VanVleet. Bringing Harrell doesn’t really solve any of the Knicks’ major problems.
