The Knicks’ second-round steal could earn him a rotation boost sooner than expected

One of the most impressive players for the New York Knicks so far this preseason has been second-round rookie guard Tyler Kolek. Despite a glut of guards on their roster, Kolek could find his way into head coach Tom Thibodeau’s rotation much sooner than expected.

Kolek has shined in the first two preseason games for New York, averaging 13 points and three assists while shooting 60 percent from the field and 44 percent from three. He’s also shown quick hands on defense with an average of two steals per game so far, which should make Thibodeau feel good about playing him after there were early concerns about his defense.

As mentioned, the Knicks have a surplus of guards that Kolek should earn a spot on. His biggest competition is veteran guard Cameron Payne, who has also put together a solid preseason so far and could start the season as a backup behind Jalen Brunson.

Miles McBride also looks ready to step up after a high-impact season last year, meaning Kolek will have to make a strong impression to earn a spot in the rotation. However, he has shown critical skills so far that could really benefit the second unit in the regular season.
