Report: Donovan Mitchell to Knicks ‘The ship has sailed’

According to NBA insider Michael Scotto of HoopsHype, Donovan Mitchell has been traded to the New York Knicks “the ship has sailed.”

Mitchell is expected to sign an extension with the Cleveland Cavaliers this offseason.

“The Knicks have always prioritized the flexibility of being able to trade for a star,” Scotto said. “That’s why they have a ton of draft picks and flexible contracts that they can include in deals. Bondy, to your question about who that star would be, let’s get this out of the way: Donovan Mitchell’s ship bound for New York has set sail.

Mitchell wanted the Utah Jazz to trade him to the Knicks in 2022. However, the Jazz sent him to the Cavaliers.

Mitchell can sign a four-year, $208 million extension this offseason. He is under contract for next season and has a $37 million player option for 2025-26.

Mitchell averaged 26.6 points, 5.1 rebounds and 6.1 assists this season, shooting 46.2 percent from the field, 36.8 percent from beyond the arc and 86.5 percent from the free throw line.

The Cavaliers beat the Orlando Magic in the first round of the playoffs in seven games, but lost to the Boston Celtics in the second round in five games.

Mitchell has career averages of 24.8 points, 4.3 rebounds and 4.6 assists with the Jazz and Cavaliers. Last season against the Chicago Bulls he scored a career-high 71 points.
