Randle must improve defensively to deserve a long-term extension

Both Knicks fans and management are hoping for an improved version of Julius Randle next season. If Randle doesn’t commit to the defensive end, it would be unwise to offer him an early contract extension. New York’s current lack of urgency in negotiating an extension suggests they would prefer to evaluate Randle’s performance and integration with the team before making a decision.

From Randle’s perspective, Brunson’s contract puts pressure on him to perform well and prove his worth to the team. Both sides will inevitably be headed for media scrutiny and headlines if an agreement isn’t reached before the June 30 deadline.
