OG Anunoby is progressing from his hamstring injury and could return for Game 1 of the Eastern Conference Finals, giving the Knicks a major boost.
For a few anxious hours, New York Knicks fans feared the worst.
When OG Anunoby left the closing stretch of Game 2 against the Philadelphia 76ers with a right hamstring issue, memories of past playoff heartbreak immediately returned. The concern was understandable. Anunoby’s health has become one of the most important factors in New York’s championship chase, and any setback involving his hamstring was always going to create serious tension around the franchise.
Fortunately for the Knicks, the situation appears far less damaging than initially feared.
Anunoby missed the final two games of the series, but New York completed the sweep anyway. More importantly, optimism has continued to grow that the two-way forward could be ready when the Eastern Conference Finals begin.
Positive signs emerge after Anunoby’s hamstring scare
The biggest reason for optimism is timing. The Knicks closed out Philadelphia quickly, giving Anunoby an extended recovery window before Game 1 of the next round. With more than a week between the initial injury and the start of the conference finals, New York has been able to proceed cautiously without rushing him back into game action.
Multiple reports have pointed toward confidence that Anunoby will be available for the opener. His participation in portions of practice, including shooting work and individual drills, suggests progress even if he has not yet returned fully to live scrimmage activity.
That distinction matters. The Knicks do not need to force the issue today. They need Anunoby ready when the next series begins.
His value is obvious. Before the injury, Anunoby had been one of New York’s most important playoff performers, giving the team elite defense, efficient scoring and the kind of lineup flexibility that becomes priceless in the postseason. Whether the opponent is Detroit or Cleveland, his ability to guard top creators and space the floor could dramatically change the matchup.
Why the Knicks are keeping his status carefully guarded
Mike Brown’s public approach has been cautious, and that should not surprise anyone.
The Knicks’ head coach has repeatedly emphasized a day-by-day evaluation, avoiding any firm declaration about Anunoby’s availability. He also declined to provide complete detail about the forward’s physical progress, including whether he has resumed full sprinting.
That restraint could be simple caution. It could also be a bit of playoff gamesmanship.
At this stage of the postseason, teams rarely benefit from giving opponents complete injury clarity. If the Knicks can keep Detroit or Cleveland uncertain about Anunoby’s exact status, it forces both potential opponents to prepare for multiple scenarios.
Still, the overall tone around his recovery remains positive. The fact that the Knicks have additional days before Game 1 only strengthens the belief that Anunoby has a realistic chance to return without significant limitations.
For New York, that would be enormous.
The Knicks have already proven they can win without him in the short term, but the Eastern Conference Finals will be a different challenge. To reach the NBA Finals, they need their best defensive weapons healthy, especially against opponents with dangerous perimeter creators.
Anunoby’s injury scare briefly threatened to change the entire mood around New York’s playoff run. Now, the outlook feels much brighter.
The Knicks are rested, rolling and possibly getting one of their most important players back at exactly the right time.
