Knicks Struggle Without Brunson, Suffer Costly Loss to Hornets

The Knicks anticipated offensive struggles without Jalen Brunson, and their 3-4 record in his absence confirms those concerns. However, they must find ways to stay competitive and maintain confidence when shots aren’t falling. On Thursday night, the Hornets capitalized on Brunson’s absence, securing a 17-point upset. The Knicks’ offense sputtered, hitting just 40 percent of their shots, while Charlotte shot an efficient 48.9 percent from the field.

OG Anunoby led the way for New York with 25 points, while Karl-Anthony Towns contributed 24 points and 10 rebounds. Despite those efforts, the Knicks’ three-point shooting woes continued, as they converted just 10 of 39 attempts from beyond the arc. Though they protected the ball well with only seven turnovers, it wasn’t enough to overcome their shooting struggles.

Mikal Bridges added 16 points, and Josh Hart finished with 13 for Tom Thibodeau’s squad, which has now dropped six of its last nine games. The Knicks’ bench was virtually nonexistent, providing just 11 points, while Charlotte’s reserves stepped up with 37.

Losing to the Hornets—one of the Eastern Conference’s weakest teams—highlighted the Knicks’ ongoing struggles without key contributors. Injuries and fatigue have clearly taken a toll, but Hart emphasized that excuses won’t cut it.

With the playoffs approaching, the Knicks must quickly regain their edge before their slump jeopardizes their postseason standing. Thursday’s loss, coupled with the Pacers’ win over the Nets, has trimmed New York’s lead for the No. 3 seed to just three games.

Hart and the Knicks will have a brief opportunity to regroup at home before facing the Washington Wizards on Saturday. If they can’t turn things around soon, their postseason aspirations could be in serious trouble.
