As the NBA trade deadline approaches, the New York Knicks are actively exploring ways to bolster their front court depth. With the team committed to retaining Mitchell Robinson and trading Jericho Sims to the Milwaukee Bucks, their options remain limited by salary cap constraints. However, a potential target who fits the cap is the Philadelphia 76ers’ breakout star Guerschon Yabusele.
Yabusele’s NBA Resurgence
Back in the NBA for the first time this decade after a brief stint with the Boston Celtics, Yabusele has emerged as a vital contributor for the Sixers. Known for his explosive athleticism—highlighted by a dunk over LeBron James during the Olympics—the French forward is averaging 11.1 points, 5.6 rebounds, and 2 assists per game, while shooting over 50% from the field and 40% from three-point range.
Trade Interest Heating Up
Despite his focus on the current season, Yabusele has reportedly drawn interest from the Knicks, his former Celtics, and the Denver Nuggets. “I’m just trying to think about playing right now. I’m still a Sixers player and I hope to stay a Sixers player,” Yabusele told Sam DiGiovanni of ClutchPoints.
With the 76ers struggling amid injuries and sitting 11th in the Eastern Conference with a 20-29 record, Yabusele has taken on an increased role. Since the New Year, he has been averaging 32.2 minutes per game, while posting 13.5 points, 6.3 rebounds, and 2.5 assists.
76ers’ Rebuilding Moves
The Sixers recently sent veteran Caleb Martin to the Dallas Mavericks in exchange for former Knick Quentin Grimes, signaling their intent to prioritize youth and future assets. Trading Yabusele could further their rebuilding efforts, while providing them with a valuable asset.
How Yabusele Fits in New York
For the Knicks, Yabusele’s versatility makes him an intriguing option. At 6’8″ and 260 pounds, he can slot in at the power forward position alongside Karl-Anthony Towns or Mitchell Robinson, or serve as a small-ball center with Precious Achiuwa. His addition would ease the workload on Mikal Bridges, OG Anunoby, and Josh Hart, offering Coach Tom Thibodeau more flexibility in the rotation.
As the trade deadline looms, the Knicks’ interest in Yabusele highlights their desire to strengthen their roster for a playoff push while the Sixers contemplate their long-term vision.
