Kevin Durant: “I didn’t want to be the savior of the Knicks”

While there seemed to be a lot of hope among Knicks fans that Kevin Durant would sign with New York as a free agent last summer, the superstar reiterated once again that joining the Knicks was never really a consideration.

“I never planned to go to the Knicks,” Durant told JJ Redick during Redick’s The Old Man and the Three podcast. “It was just … the media that put it out there.”

Ahead of the final offseason, the prevailing thought was that the Knicks would do whatever it takes to free up roof space to add Durant and another star, trading Kristaps Porzingis to free up even more money.

But Durant said he never really considered signing with New York.

“I didn’t want to be the savior of the Knicks or of New York,” Durant said. “I didn’t care about being the king of New York. This has never really moved me. I didn’t care that I was on Broadway. I just wanted to play ball and go to the crib and relax. And that’s what Brooklyn embodied”.
