Carmelo Anthony can return to the Knicks for a veteran role

While there are no new reports linking Carmelo Anthony to the Knicks, SNY’s Ian Begley believes it will be considered as a possible addition out of season.

The Knicks were reportedly interested in signing it last summer if they acquired agents without a superstar. And Knicks president Leon Rose was Melo’s agent. So there are many reasons to believe that the former scoring champion can return to New York.

Anthony recently spoke of the emotional roller coaster he experienced after being actually left out of town by Phil Jackson during his last season in New York. While Jackson was fired before Anthony was exchanged, the damage had been done. Ten-time All-Star has spent the past few seasons trying to regain its identity after being forced into unfamiliar roles with Oklahoma City and Houston.

He eventually found a safe haven with the Portland Trail Blazers where he played 50 games this season, averaging 15.3 points on 42.6% shooting, his best shooting performance since his last season with the Knicks .

The 35-year-old can certainly still play an important role for a contending team, but it remains to be seen if he would like to return to New York to act as a veteran leader who is no longer a star player in the offense, even if the players around him are not necessarily ready to take on the main role.
